A shopper who loved your store last month is not thinking about you today. They are busy, they are scrolling, and the new arrivals you are excited about are invisible to them. Get in front of that person at the right moment and they come back. Miss the moment and they buy the same thing somewhere else.
For a shop or boutique, that moment is short. A new drop is fresh for a week. A sale is urgent for a weekend. A back-in-stock item is wanted right now or not at all. The channel that reaches a shopper inside that window is not a social post they may never see, and it is not an email that sits unopened. It is a text.
Texts get opened at about a 98% rate, most within minutes. Email averages around 20%. A social post reaches only whoever the algorithm decides to show. When you text your best shoppers "the [item] you wanted is back, first 10 get it," you sell it before the day is out.
This playbook shows you how to build a list of shoppers who want your texts, and hands you the messages that turn a quiet week into a busy one.
Retail is a timing game. Inventory is fresh for a short window, sales are urgent by design, and foot traffic swings with the day of the week. Texting is the only channel fast enough to match your message to that timing. Send a weekend offer Thursday evening, when people plan their weekend, and the store is busy by Saturday.
It also rewards a personal touch. "We held one back for you" or "you get first look" makes a shopper feel like a regular, not a target. That feeling is what turns a one-time buyer into someone who checks their phone for your next drop.
And the list is yours. Not rented from a platform, not locked in a point-of-sale you might replace. Every number belongs to a shopper who walked in, bought something, and asked to hear from you.
Texting only works with permission, and permission is why texts get read. Every shopper on your list opted in. Three ways to join, and you should run all three.
Make joining worth it: 15% off the next purchase, early access to sales, or first pick of new stock. The welcome offer earns itself back the next time that shopper comes in, so it pays for itself on the very next sale.
Two rules protect the list. Send one or two campaigns a week at most, and never text before 9am or after 8pm local time. A shopper who signed up for first looks will forgive a good offer. They will not forgive being pinged every day.
